Recreating the 1973 RS ducktail from a single scanned original

How we turned one borrowed, slightly dented factory ducktail into a perfect digital master and a repeatable steel part.

Original 1973 Carrera RS ducktails are rare, expensive, and almost never straight. The one we borrowed from a collector in San Antonio had a shallow dent on the trailing edge and forty years of filler hiding a hand repair. It was perfect for our purposes.

We scanned the part at 0.05 mm resolution, then let our reconstruction model do what it does best: separate the designer's intent from the damage. The AI is trained on the geometry of period Porsche panels, so it recognises the characteristic radii and compound curves and rebuilds the surface as it would have left the press tool.

From the clean surface we generated a hammer form and a matching check fixture, both printed overnight. The steel skin was wheeled and planished over the buck by hand, then lead-loaded at the seams. Laid back on the original scan, the finished part deviated by less than 0.3 mm.

The collector got his ducktail back with a full digital record. Commission 001 got a ducktail that fits better than the original.
